EUROPEAN MODERN JIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS

TO BE HELD IN WARSAW, POLAND

13th APRIL 2013

This Modern Jive Tournament is open to everyone, there are categories for all levels of dancer. Dress can be casual or professional, it's the dancers' choice.

Take a Chance and Jack & Jill Modern Jive categories do not require partners, as they will be allocated on the day.

EUROPEAN MODERN JIVE CATEGORIES AND PRIZES

All category winners, will receive a European Title and Trophy. Medals will be be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category. In addition the first placed entrants of each category will receive separate prizes.

OPEN

This is the premier Modern Jive category. Entry is open to all levels of dancer. This is a freestyle dancing competition.

1st Place Prize: £250 per couple

SPOTLIGHT

An original choreographed composition by a dance couple of between 3 and 5 minutes, danced to their own chosen music. All dance styles are permitted, there is no requirement for Modern Jive elements. The routine performed will be assessed in accordance with the Judging criteria.

Entrants in this category will be contacted so that they can provide their music track. Apply early to reserve your entry as places will be limited.

1st Place Prize: £250 per couple

ADVANCED

Open to amateurs only. Dance Teachers and/or Professional dancers (see definitions below) are not eligible. This is a freestyle dancing competition and is recommended for all those that have been dancing Modern Jive for twelve months or more.

1st Place Prize: £150 per couple.

INTERMEDIATE

Open to amateurs only. Dance Teachers and/or Professional dancers (see definitions below)and previous winners of this category are not eligible. This is a freestyle dancing competition and is recommended for all those that have been dancing Modern Jive for six months or more.

1st Place Prize: £125 per couple.

RISING STARS

Open to amateurs only. Dance Teachers and/or Professional dancers (see definitions) are not eligible. This is a freestyle dancing competition. This category is for those dancers who have just started dancing Modern Jive.

1st Place Prize: £100 per couple.

SENIOR (45+)

Open to amateurs only who are both 45 years or older. Dance Teachers and/or Professional dancers (see definitions below) are not eligible. This is a freestyle dancing competition.

1st Place Prize: £125 per couple.

JACK AND JILL

Open to all levels of dancer. In each round the best Male and Female dancers will be selected to go through to the next round.

1st Place Prize: £50 per person.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Open to all levels of dancer. Entries are made up of any three competitors who perform modern jive related figures, demonstrating lead and follow.

1st Place Prize: £100 per trio.

AIR STEPS

Open to all levels of dancer. Freestyle Modern Jive dancing with as many aerials as you like and have the strength for.

1st Place Prize: £75 per couple.

TAKE A CHANCE

Open to all levels of dancer. Your partner will be allocated on the day. One warm-up dance prior to commencement of judging.

1st Place Prize: £50 per couple.

PRO - AM

Open to all levels of dancer, however only one of the dance couple may be a Dance teacher and/or a Professional dancer.

COMPETITION DEFINITIONS & RULES

GENERAL COMPETITION RULES

  • The competition is open to all persons over 18 years of age.
  • Competitors can enter any number of categories, where eligible, however the only restriction is that they may only enter one of either the Open, Advanced, Intermediate or Rising Star categories.
  • If in the Judges opinion, a couple have entered a category, Advanced, Intermediate or Rising Star that is regarded as too low for their ability, the couple will be moved to up to the next category.
  • Couples will consist of 1 male, 1 female.
  • This is a Modern Jive competition, therefore all dancing will need to be 70% recognisable as Modern Jive, such as Leroc, Ceroc. Other forms of Jive such as Ballroom Jive, Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie, West Coast Swing, Rock and Roll, Disco-Samba, Disco-Fox are not eligible. The only exception is in the Spotlight category where all dance styles will be accepted
  • This is a freestyle competition where a definite lead and follow must be demonstrated.
  • Couples will dance to music chosen by the organisers of the European Modern Jive competition. The music included may be chosen from the 1940’s to present day.

DEFINITIONS

  • A Dance Teacher and/or Professional dancer is any person that is a dance instructor - full or part time, and/or holds any form of dance category certificate.
  • An Air Step is any lift or dip that results in both feet of either partner being above their partners waist, at normal standing level.
  • Air Steps are not permitted. With the exception in the European Open Category where two aerials will be permitted per music track. Airsteps will also be permitted in the Spotlight category. In all other cases disqualification from the competition will be automatic should a couple attempt any Airsteps

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • The Judges decision is final.
  • Judging will be based on a points system. Points will be awarded for Style, Musical Interpretation, Dress and Presentation and Technique. (Please refer to the Judging Criteria).
  • Jive Nation Poland Ltd and its associates reserve the right to change the programme and competition if necessary without consultation.
  • The event will be recorded by film, video and photograph; these may be used for Jive Nation Poland Ltd and its associates for promotional purposes without any obligation.
  • Jive Nation Poland Ltd and its associates accepts no responsibility for loss or injury to persons or possessions in relation to this event.
  • Individual Recording will be allowed, as long as prior permission has been given by Jive Nation Poland Ltd

JUDGING CRITERIA AND SCORING

To help you get the most out of the competition the details below indicate what the judges are looking for and how you will be scored on your performance. Criteria Section What the Judges are looking for:

  • Costume & Presentation, Have the couple made and effort to dress up for the competition? Is there good interaction between the couple? Are they smiling? Do they look like they are having fun? Marks available = 1 - 3
  • Musicality, Interpretation. Are the couple dancing to the style of the music? Are the moves they are doing in keeping with the rhythm and character of the music? Are the couples just dancing or are they performing the moves? Does the personality of the couple show through the moves they are dancing? Marks available = 1 - 5
  • Technique. Are the move technically correct? Are the moves performed with good pattern and direction? Are they using the floor well? Are they considerate to others on the floor? Is there a clear lead and follow? Marks available = 1 - 5
  • Variety, Complexity. Is there a good variation of moves? Is the difficulty and complexity of the move relevant to the category they have entered? Are the moves executed correctly? Do the moves flow? Marks available = 1 - 5

Each Couple, Trio and Team will be marked individually. Not against the people you are dancing next to in your heat.

All the scores are entered into the computer and the Competitors with the highest scores will be put through to the next Round.

Dependent upon the number of Judges the maximum score each competitor will vary - however the maximum number of points awarded to an entrant from any one judge is 18 points.

All scores will be recorded and any competitor can contact the European Championships to find out how they did. They can also request feed back from the Judges. After the competition has ended.
